Clover Flex vs Clover Mini: Handheld or Countertop, Decided by How You Take Payments

Clover Flex vs Mini on screen, battery, printer, LTE, cash drawer, camera, offline mode and price, with a recommendation for each business type.

Short answer

Flex is a handheld: 5.99-inch screen, battery, LTE, camera and printer, $699 to $749 list. Mini is a countertop: 8-inch screen, printer, Wi-Fi and LTE, a hub for a cash drawer and scanner, $849 list. Both run the same Clover software and both support offline payments.

If the customer comes to you and stands at a counter, Mini. If you go to the customer, whether that is a table, a curb, a driveway or a job site, Flex. Many businesses have one of each.

Through a dealer both are placed at no charge for qualifying merchants, so the choice is about workflow, not price.

Flex or Mini is the most common Clover question, and it has a simple answer once you describe how a payment happens in your business. This page gives the spec comparison, then the recommendation by business type.

The one-device case

A very small counter without cash can run entirely on a Flex sitting in its dock, and take the Flex to events. A cafe that never leaves the counter can run entirely on a Mini. When in doubt between the two for a fixed counter, the Mini’s larger screen and cash drawer support make it the safer single device.

The two-device case

Restaurants with a dining room, retailers with curbside, and any business with a counter plus a road. Both devices sit on one account, one menu or inventory, one report. Dual pricing runs on both: the customer sees both totals on whichever screen is in front of them. The guest-side detail is on dual pricing on Clover.

Pricing

Through us both are placed at no charge for qualifying merchants, so the decision is about how you take payments, not about $100 of hardware. Software plans are identical. Processing is $0 under dual pricing or interchange-plus if you prefer one posted price. The Clover pricing page has the plan prices and worked examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Clover Flex and Clover Mini?
Mobility. The Flex has a battery and LTE and is carried to the customer. The Mini sits on a counter with a larger 8-inch screen and a hub for a cash drawer, barcode scanner and other accessories. Both run the same software, take the same payments, print receipts and support offline mode.
Can a Clover Flex replace a Clover Mini?
For a small counter with no cash drawer, yes; the Flex on its dock works as a countertop terminal. For a counter that takes cash, scans many barcodes or wants the larger screen, the Mini is the better fit and the Flex is an addition.
Which is better for a restaurant, Flex or Mini?
Full service: Flex for pay at table, plus a Station or Mini at the counter. Quick service and cafes: Mini at the counter, Flex only if you line-bust. Bars: Mini or Station at the rail, Flex for the patio.
Which is better for retail?
Mini, with a cash drawer and scanner on the hub, for the register. Flex for curbside pickup, sidewalk sales and inventory counts with its camera scanner.
Do I need both?
Restaurants with a dining room almost always do. Retail with curbside often does. Cafes, salons and offices usually need only a Mini. Mobile businesses need only a Flex.
