Payment Gateways, Explained and Compared, for Businesses That Already Have Software

You built your store, your billing or your practice software around a gateway years ago. You should not have to rebuild it to stop overpaying. Below: how gateways and processors fit together, what each gateway charges, which ones are being retired, and how to move without losing stored cards or orders.

The short version

A gateway captures the card; a processor moves the money. On standalone gateways (Authorize.net, NMI, accept.blue, Fluidpay, PayTrace) you pay both, often to two companies. On bundled providers (Stripe, Braintree, WooPayments, Shopify Payments) one flat rate covers both.

The gateway fee is $0 to $30 a month and almost never decides the bill. The processing model does: flat 2.9% + 30¢ versus interchange plus a stated markup. Above roughly $10,000 to $15,000 a month card-not-present, standalone plus interchange-plus wins by 0.4% to 0.8% of volume.

Every gateway below can export stored cards to another PCI-compliant gateway. Migrations take one to five weeks. We supply gateway and processing on one month-to-month bill, or re-price the processing behind the gateway you keep.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a payment gateway and a payment processor?
The gateway is the software that securely captures the card and sends it for authorization: Authorize.net, NMI, accept.blue, Fluidpay and PayTrace are gateways. The processor and acquiring bank move the money and charge interchange plus markup. Most merchants pay both, often to two companies. We supply both on one bill, or re-price the processing behind the gateway you keep.
Can I keep my shopping cart or software if I switch gateways?
Almost always. WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Ecwid, OpenCart, QuickBooks and most billing and practice tools support several gateways. Switching is a plugin install or new API keys. Shopify is the exception: it charges a fee for third-party gateways, so the math is different there.
Do I lose stored customer cards when I change gateways?
No. Gateways export vaulted cards to another PCI-compliant gateway on request, encrypted to the receiving party. The new gateway imports them and your software is remapped to new tokens. Authorize.net, Stripe, Braintree, CardPointe and Elavon all support this. Allow two to five weeks with recurring billing.
Which gateway is cheapest?
The gateway fee is $0 to $30 a month and is rarely the deciding factor. Under about $10,000 a month a bundled provider with no monthly fee (Stripe, WooPayments, Square) is cheapest in total. Above that, a standalone gateway with interchange-plus processing wins, usually by 0.4% to 0.8% of volume.
My gateway is being retired. What do I do?
PayPal Payflow and Global Payments’ Transaction Express are both being retired in 2026. Export your reporting, request a stored-card export to a new PCI-compliant gateway, and use the forced change to re-price the processing. The pages for each gateway below have the dates and steps.
