Clover for Food Trucks: One Flex, Cellular, Offline Payments, and Dual Pricing at the Window

The food truck Clover setup on a Flex Gen 4 with LTE and offline mode, a window menu, tips on screen, a dock in the truck, pre-orders, and dual pricing on small tickets.

Short answer

A food truck needs a POS that runs on battery and cellular, prints a receipt, keeps taking cards when the signal drops, and packs into a drawer at night. The Clover Flex Gen 4 is that device: 8-hour battery, LTE, built-in printer, offline payments queue, and the full Clover menu.

One Flex is the whole POS. Add a second for a two-window rush, a Kitchen Display or printer inside the truck if the cook cannot see the Flex, and Clover Online Ordering for pre-orders at events.

Trucks are cash-heavy and card-heavy at once. Dual pricing on the Flex shows both prices at the window; the truck keeps its cash price on every order and pays nothing in processing on card orders.

A food truck’s POS has to survive a parking lot with no Wi-Fi, a generator that browns out, a twelve-hour festival day, and a line that does not stop. Then it has to fit in a drawer. The Clover Flex does all of that, and it is the device we send out with most trucks. This page is the setup and the settings that keep it running.

Connectivity and offline mode

The Flex connects over LTE by default. Enable offline payments in the Clover dashboard before you need them, set a per-transaction limit, and the Flex keeps taking cards when the signal drops, submitting them when it returns. Two rules: offline transactions are not authorized until they sync, so the limit should be an amount you can afford to lose on a declined card; and refunds need a live connection. Full detail on Clover offline mode.

Few items, big buttons, modifiers for the choices that matter (protein, spice, sides, drinks), combos as one tap. Sold-out toggles for the item that runs out at 1pm. Daily specials as a category you edit from the dashboard on your phone.

Tips

Tip prompt on the Flex screen at tap; presets by amount for small tickets rather than percentages. Tips report per shift for payout to the crew.

Dual pricing at the window

The Flex shows the cash total and the card total; the customer picks. A sign at the window and a line on the menu board disclose it. On a $12 order the difference at 3.99% is 48 cents. A truck doing $25,000 a month in cards keeps about $700 a month that a processor would take. The rules and the comparison with a surcharge are on dual pricing on Clover.

Cost

Flex placed at no charge for qualifying trucks, or purchased; never leased. Software: Counter Service plan at $59.95 a month, or Essentials at $14.95 for a simple menu with no online ordering. Processing $0 under dual pricing or interchange-plus. Month to month. The Flex ships pre-programmed with the menu loaded; a 15-minute call gets the crew running.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Clover for a food truck?
The Clover Flex Gen 4: battery rated up to 8 hours, LTE built in, receipt printer, camera, and the full menu and reporting. The Flex Pocket is the same device without a printer for trucks that text receipts. The Clover Go with a phone works for very low volume but depends on the phone.
Does Clover work without Wi-Fi on a truck?
Yes. The Flex runs on LTE. When cellular drops, offline mode (enabled ahead of time in the dashboard) stores card transactions up to your limit and submits them when the signal returns. Offline transactions are not authorized until then, so set the limit to a ticket you can afford to lose.
How do I get orders to the cook?
For a small truck, the cook reads the Flex or a printed ticket. For a busy truck, a kitchen printer or Clover Kitchen Display inside the truck on the same account, with the Flex at the window.
Can customers pre-order from a food truck on Clover?
Yes. Clover Online Ordering gives the truck an ordering page with pickup times; orders route to the Flex or a printer. Post the link on social media before an event.
Is dual pricing worth it on a food truck?
Trucks take a lot of cards on small tickets, and 2.6% to 3.5% of every card order is real money on a $12 average. Dual pricing shows both totals on the Flex at the window and takes the truck's processing to zero. Cash customers pay the cash price as before.
