Reprogramming a Clover or Buying One Used: Locked to the Processor, Not to You

Clover devices are locked to the processor they were built for, not your merchant account. When a Clover can be re-boarded, when it cannot, and what to check before.

Short answer

A Clover device is locked to the processor it was boarded on (the processing platform behind your account), not to your individual merchant account. A new merchant account on the same processor can take over the device; a different processor cannot use it at all.

That is why switching dealers is often possible without new hardware and switching processors is not. Before you sign with anyone, find out which processor your Clover is on and which processor the new provider boards with. If they match, the device is re-boarded to your new account. If they do not, the new provider places new hardware.

A used Clover works only for a buyer whose account is on the processor the device is locked to, and only after the old merchant account is deactivated on it. Buying used without knowing the processor is a gamble; buying from a dealer who boards on that processor is fine.

“Can you reprogram my Clover?” is the first question from most merchants who want to leave their provider, and the answer is “it depends on the processor.” Clover devices are not locked to you; they are locked to the processing platform they were built for. That distinction decides whether you keep your hardware when you switch, and whether a used Clover is a bargain or a brick.

What the lock actually is

Older countertop terminals were generic: any processor could load its software and run them. Clover is not. Each device is built and activated for a specific processor, meaning the processing platform (the acquirer’s front end) behind the merchant account. On that processor, the device can serve any merchant account: it is deactivated from one and boarded to another. On a different processor, it cannot process at all, and no one can reprogram it to. Clover’s platform, owned by Fiserv, is closed by design.

Consequences:

  • Changing providers on the same processor: the hardware can move with you.
  • Changing processors: the hardware stays behind; new devices are placed.
  • Buying used: works only if the device’s processor matches your account’s processor.
  • Owning the hardware: matters within a processor, not across processors.

Same processor: how a re-board works

  1. Confirm the device’s processor from the serial number or the old account’s statement.
  2. Confirm the new provider boards on the same processor.
  3. Export menu, inventory, employees and customers from the old dashboard.
  4. The old merchant account is deactivated on the device (the old provider releases it, or the new provider handles the deactivation where the platform allows).
  5. The device is boarded to the new merchant account, data imported, printers and settings reconfigured.
  6. Test transactions on the new account.

Usually a day, sometimes two if the old provider is slow to release. The device does not leave the counter.

Different processor: what happens instead

The device cannot be used. This is the case free-equipment programs exist for: the new provider places replacement hardware at no charge for qualifying merchants so the switching cost is not the price of a Station Duo. The placed device stays the provider’s property and goes back if you leave. Your data still moves; it exports from the old dashboard and imports to the new account before install.

Buying used

SituationOutcome
Device locked to your processor, old account deactivated, dealer on that processor activates itWorks
Device locked to your processor, old account still active on itWorks once the old account is deactivated, which needs the previous owner’s provider
Device locked to a different processorNever works on your account
Processor unknownA gamble; most online listings cannot tell you

If you are set on used, buy from a dealer who boards on the matching processor and will activate it, or send us the serial number first.

Switching providers with Clover

SituationWhat happens to the hardware
New provider on the same processorRe-boarded to your new account; you keep it
New provider on a different processorCannot be used; replacement hardware placed
Business sold, buyer’s account on the same processorRe-boarded to the buyer
Business sold, buyer on a different processorReplaced

The question to ask any new provider, including us: which processor do you board on, and is it the one my Clover is on? We tell you the answer on the first call and quote either the re-board or the placement. The pricing comparison that should decide the switch is on the Clover pricing page, and the questions to ask any seller are on Clover reseller vs direct.

Your data moves either way

Menus, inventory, customer lists and reports export from the Clover dashboard. On a new account we import them before the re-board or the install, so the counter opens with your menu on it. Ask any provider to confirm that in writing before you switch.

Find out whether your Clover can come with you

Text a photo of the device and the name on your current statement. We identify the processor, tell you whether we can re-board it to a new account or place replacement hardware, and quote the processing so you can compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Clover locked to the merchant account or the processor?
The processor. A Clover boarded on a given processing platform can be moved to a different merchant account on that same platform, which is how you can change dealers and keep the hardware. It cannot be reprogrammed to run on a different processor, which is why a processor change means new devices.
Can I reprogram my Clover to a different processor?
No. Clover's platform, owned by Fiserv, does not allow a device built for one processor to be re-boarded on another. What you can do is move the device to a new merchant account with a new provider on the same processor. Ask both providers which processor they use before deciding.
Is it safe to buy a used Clover on eBay?
Only if you know which processor the device is locked to and your account is, or will be, on that processor, and the previous merchant account has been deactivated on the device. A used Clover locked to a different processor than yours will never take a payment. Buying from a dealer who boards on the matching processor and will activate it for you is the safe version.
What happens to my Clover if I switch providers?
If the new provider boards on the same processor, the device is deactivated from the old account and boarded to the new one; your menu and settings are exported and re-imported. If the new provider is on a different processor, the device cannot be used and the new provider places replacement hardware, which is what free-equipment programs are for.
I bought my Clover outright. Do I own it?
You own the hardware. Its payment capability is tied to the processor it was built for. On that processor it can serve any merchant account; on any other processor it cannot process. Ownership matters when you move between providers on the same platform, and it does not help when you change platforms.
Can a new owner of my business use my Clover?
Yes, if the new owner's merchant account is on the same processor: the device is deactivated from your account and boarded to theirs. If their new account is on a different processor, the device needs replacing.
