Clover vs Square vs Toast: Which One, for Which Business, at What Cost

Clover, Square and Toast side by side on processing and lock-in, hardware, plans, restaurant depth, contracts and support, with a decision by business type and.

Short answer

Square is the easiest start: free software, cheap hardware, no contract, flat 2.6% plus a per-item fee in person, and no way to negotiate. Toast is the deepest restaurant platform: payroll, scheduling, inventory and multi-location built in, at the price of Toast-only processing (about 2.49% + 15¢ on the paid plan, higher on the free one) and multi-year agreements. Clover is the flexible middle: strong hardware, good single-location software, and processing you choose, including dual pricing at $0 through a dealer.

Under $5,000 a month or brand new: Square. Multi-location restaurant group or one-vendor operations: Toast. Single-location restaurants, bars, cafes, retail and services above $5,000 a month: Clover through a dealer with month-to-month terms.

At $60,000 a month a restaurant pays roughly $21,600 a year in processing on Square, $20,800 on Toast's paid plan, $18,500 on Clover direct, and $0 on Clover with dual pricing.

These are the three systems in almost every small-business POS decision, and they are built on three different bets: Square on simplicity, Toast on depth, Clover on flexibility. We sell Clover. This page keeps the places where the other two win, because the wrong system is worse for us than the lost sale.

Where each one wins

Square. Under about $5,000 a month. New businesses that do not know their volume. Anyone who wants an account in ten minutes and one login for POS, appointments, invoices and payroll. Very small retail and services.

Toast. Multi-location restaurant groups. Restaurants that want payroll, scheduling, tips management and inventory in one vendor and will pay for it in processing. Complex kitchens with Toast’s KDS and routing.

Clover. Single-location restaurants, bars and cafes above $5,000 a month that care about the processing line. Retail with barcodes. Service businesses that want a real POS. Any business that wants to choose its processor, run dual pricing, and keep month-to-month terms. Read the dealer contract; the risk on the Clover side is the seller, not the product.

The risks

Square: aggregator holds and closures after the fact. Toast: processing lock-in and multi-year terms; nothing is free, the $0 hardware is in the rate. Clover: a bad dealer with leases, ETFs and teaser rates. The eight questions that protect you from the last one are on Clover reseller vs direct.

The decision

Brand new or tiny: Square. Multi-location or one-vendor: Toast. Everyone else with a counter or a dining room: Clover through a dealer who puts terms on one page. The two-way comparisons with more detail are Clover vs Square and Clover vs Toast.

Frequently asked questions

Which is best for a small restaurant: Clover, Square or Toast?
For a single-location restaurant that cares about the processing line, Clover through a dealer with dual pricing usually costs least and does not lock in processing. Toast is better when you want payroll, scheduling and multi-location tools in the POS and accept Toast processing. Square for Restaurants is fine for small counters that want to start today.
Which is cheapest?
To start, Square. Per transaction, Clover direct (2.3% + 10¢) is below Square (2.6% plus a per-item fee) and Toast's paid plan (about 2.49% + 15¢). Through a dealer with dual pricing, Clover's processing cost to the merchant is zero, which neither Square nor Toast offers. Contract terms decide the real cost over three years.
Which one locks you in?
Toast requires Toast processing and its agreements have commonly run multi-year, with hardware financed. Square has no contract but is an aggregator that can hold funds or close accounts after the fact. Clover direct has no long-term processing contract; Clover through a dealer is whatever the dealer writes, month to month with us.
Which is best for retail?
Square for Retail for small inventories and easy setup. Clover Retail Growth for bigger inventories with barcodes, returns and variants. Toast is restaurant-only. High-SKU liquor and smoke shops need a dedicated retail system like Exatouch rather than any of the three.
Can I run dual pricing on Square or Toast?
Square offers surcharging in permitted markets, not dual pricing; surcharges are capped, cannot apply to debit, and are restricted in California. Toast has offered fee programs subject to the same surcharge rules. Clover through a dealer supports dual pricing, which applies to all cards and works in every state with proper disclosure.
